Film · a look in liminal.repair
Photos from the iPhone 4 have a look you recognise before you know why: bright and warm, skies a pale cyan rather than blue, reds and oranges pushed hard, shadows that never quite reach black, and fine grain left in rather than smoothed away. At a party, the LED flash lit the nearest face hot and warm and let the room fall away into murk.

Phone4 is built from a deep dive into that camera: what the reviews said in 2010, and measurements of real iPhone 4 photos — exposure, where the highlights clip, the colour cast in grey surfaces, saturation hue by hue, the sharpening halos, the grain, the flash. The look reproduces those numbers, down to the JPEG compression the photos picked up on their way to Facebook.
Nothing uploads. And in the liminal app on iPhone, the flash button fires the phone's real LED, so a party shot gets real flash under the 2010 colour. (liminal.repair is not affiliated with Apple.)
A small 5-megapixel sensor and Apple's 2010 processing: a bright exposure, a white balance that leaned warm (and very warm under artificial light), highlights that clipped one colour channel at a time — which is why skies went cyan — strong saturation in warm colours, crisp sharpening, and grain left in.
Yes. The Flash dial adds the LED to any photo: warm, hot in the middle, falling off fast so the room goes murky. In the liminal app on iPhone you can fire the real flash and shoot through the look.
Yes, frame by frame, with moving grain — and on the live camera.
