Privacy
liminal.repair, and the liminal.repair app for iPhone and iPad. Last updated 22 September 2026.
Your pictures stay on your device. Every effect runs on your own phone or computer. A photo or video you open here is never uploaded, and never leaves the device — unless you deliberately post it to Explore.
What is never collected
- The photos and videos you edit. They are read, processed and saved locally.
- Your location, contacts, calendar, health data or advertising identifiers.
- Anything sold or shared with advertisers or data brokers. There is no advertising in this app, and no third-party tracking.
Without an account
You can use everything the editor does without signing in. Two small, anonymous records are kept so the tool can be improved:
- Which effects get used. A row saying, for example, “datamosh · export”. No picture, no identifier, nothing joining one row to another.
- Which layout a visit used (the camera layout or the classic one), with a random browser-generated id and whether the device is a phone or a desktop. The id is created in your browser, is not tied to you, and you can clear it at any time by clearing site data.
Your saved cameras, settings and unposted work are stored on your own device, in the browser or app's local storage.
With an account
An account is optional, and only needed to post to Explore, keep cameras online, follow people, or comment. If you make one, we hold:
- Your email address and password — stored by our authentication provider; the password is kept hashed and is never visible to us.
- Your username and display name, and whether you asked for the newsletter.
- What you post: the picture or clip, its caption, the camera it was shot through, and the likes, comments and follows you make. These are public to anyone who can see Explore, which is the point of posting.
- The cameras you keep online, so other people can shoot through them.
Posts are reviewed before they appear. A picture you submit is held in a private area until it is approved, and deleted if it is rejected.
Where it is kept
Accounts, posts and the small anonymous counts above are held by established hosting and database providers, under contract and on our behalf. The website's host also provides basic traffic figures for the website — page views, not people. The iOS app loads no analytics script at all. Names of the providers are available on request to the address below.
Some parts of the editor load their code from a public software distribution network the first time you use them — the video exporter, the hand and person detection, the video converter. That fetches program code; your pictures are not sent anywhere in the process.
Permissions the app asks for
- Camera — only when you use Shoot, to show the live view and take a picture through the look. The frames are processed on the device.
- Add to Photos — only to save a picture or video you have exported. The app cannot read your photo library with this; when you choose a photo to edit, iOS hands it over one file at a time.
- Notifications — only if you are signed in and say yes, to tell you when someone follows you, likes or comments on your post, or shoots through one of your cameras. You can turn them off in iOS Settings at any time.
Children
This is not a service for children under 13, and accounts are not knowingly created for them.
Deleting your data
You can delete any post from your profile. To delete your whole account and everything attached to it, email contact@ali.photo from the address on the account and it will be removed, normally within a few days. To clear the anonymous local data, clear the site's data in your browser, or delete the app.
Changes
If this page changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes with it.
